Mysterious Birds Visiting the Small Pond

Mysterious Birds Visiting the Small Pond

There’s a small pond on the land here, in a sheltered area among large pines near the house. At dusk, we’ve seen two mysterious birds flying from the pond, making a loud, short kyok-ing sound, then disappearing into the woods.

Turns out they are green herons, which favor low-lying wetlands. Down the road, Mill Creek runs through some bottom lands, so our small pond must be one of the sites they like to frequent.

And the other day we saw crows harassing a hawk in the woods. Hummingbirds, blue birds, barn swallows, the sound of owls at night sometimes. There are a good number of winged creatures here, which makes me think that, in time, we might actually become “birders.”
